The world has no air. If you want to survive, you pay to breathe. But what if you can't? And what if you think everything could be different?

Ever since the Switch, when the oxygen levels plummeted and most of humanity died, the survivors have been protected in glass domes full of manufactured air. Protected . . . or trapped? Or controlled? Alina's a revolutionary who believes we can save the environment. Quinn's a Premium who's never had to worry about having enough air. His best friend, Bea, is an Auxiliary who's never worried about anything but having enough air. When the three cross paths, they will change everything. Sarah Crossan's thrilling and provocative novel is about passion, about yearning for something better, and about breaking free for the very first time.

When I first started reading Breathe I was worried that I might not like it. It has some mixed reviews between other bloggers that I follow, and It sounded a bit like something I had heard before. I was so happy when I few chapters in I was hooked and didn't want to stop reading till I was finished!

The characters in Breathe were wonderfully written. Quinn and Bea are so different, which makes their friendship even more interesting. Alina wasn't my favorite character but I think it could have been just a personal opinion, she didn't hold my attention. What brings my rating just shy of a 5 star one was the multiple POV's. Two I can handle, and even enjoy most of the time, But 3 was overwhelming. In the beginning  of the story I would have to stop every once and awhile and figure out which character I was reading the POC of, Bea or Alina? It wasn't that their characters weren't different, I just got caught up in the story and didn't always notice the switch in POV's.

The story was well paced, never too slow or too fast and I was always wanting to know what was coming next. The concept was really interesting and kept me thinking.  How would I handle not being able to breathe freely? Is my body strong enough to handle life outside of the dome? what would it be like to be overfed oxygen?

Breathe was a engaging story that had me on my toes and had brain working. I would highly recommend it to readers who enjoy dystopias and survival storys. Who enjoy strong characters and relationships that have rocky moments. Who like to THINK about what they read.

The Vicious Deep

The Vicious Deep written by Zoraida Cordova I haven't read any other mermaid YA novels, although I hear there's a relatively new-ish trend towards the mermaid trope.  After reading this one, I'm really not sure I want to seek out any more mermaid books.  I tried to be open-minded and read the whole book, but really, though, this was not a good book for me.  Just in terms of the writing style, basic sentence variation goes a long way to counter awkward writing.  It's something I personally struggle with, but then, I'm not looking to be a published writer either.  Beyond that though, the story itself...Tristan is the obnoxious popular kid you can't stand at school.  He's full of himself, you can't relate to him, despite his role as the main character , he's shallow, sexist, unlikable...the list of adjectives goes on.  He's a caricature of hotheaded teenage arrogance.  Guys, the sentence "I'm not rippling with the muscles of the other bros,...
